My kitchen makeover on Apartment Therapy

The lovely <a href="http://tranquiltownhouse.blogspot.com/">Kerry</a> was kind enough to let me know that my kitchen makeover was again featured on <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/at-email/renovation-inspiration-10-kitchen-before-afters-147041">Apartment Therapy</a> (oops...totally missed it!). The majority of the kitchens featured all had one thing in common - the painting of timber/timber look cabinetry, and it seems that it can be a contentious issue. I love the detail in the grain, the texture....but I have no problem painting it if need be. In our kitchen, the cabinetry combined with exposed brick, pine ceilings and dark stone floors, making the room dark, dingy and uninviting...and completely depressing. I've noticed that men, in particular, hate the idea of covering wood with paint...maybe something to do with the old 'man cave' theory?<br /><br />To me, having an inviting, bright and airy home, filled with natural light, is the ideal. One of the most telling comments on my makeover was that many people had never noticed that we have a skylight in the room. The dark surfaces totally absorbed every last ounce of light. Now, the room is light and bright, and my only regret is that I didn't do it years ago.<br /><br />So, I'd love to know what you all think about painting timber. Are you all for it, or do you think it's totally taboo? Plantation Shutters - the solution to my design dilemma?

Morning stylemeisters, I have a favour to ask - I need some unbiased and honest feedback from you! I have a little dilemma that I've been mulling over for quite a while now, and I think I've come up with a solution, but you guys have so many fabulous ideas I want to run it by you first.<br /><br />On the back wall of my kitchen, the previous owners have left a cutout between it and the formal living area. Well, it does limit the options as far as separating the formal areas from the kitchen/family area, it's not great for heating in winter, as the warmth from the open fireplace is lost up into the cathedral ceilings. And from a purely aesthetic point of view, it makes the formal living room a horror to decorate! This is the only image I've ever found of a cutout wall between the kitchen and formal living area - all the others have opened to either a dining or family room. But this ticks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned - the opening is now a stylish feature in itself, and doesn't detract from the design of the living room at all. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the living area is gorgeous in its own right, but you get my drift. So...remember I mentioned that I had a little secret? I'm on the hunt....

....for some gorgeous pendant lights for my newly-zhushed kitchen. But it's <i><b>so</b></i> hard to find lighting that's beautiful <i>and</i> affordable. As the lovely <a href="http://thehousethata-mbuilt.blogspot.com/">A-M</a> lamented recently (pop on over to read her post <a href="http://thehousethata-mbuilt.blogspot.com/2010/05/it-has-come-to-this.html">here</a>), it's really difficult to track down something that's both good-looking and within the realms of possibility price-wise. DIY Kitchen Makeover

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments on my kitchen makeover, I'm so thrilled you like the results of all my blood, sweat and numerous tears! Today as promised I'll go through all the details of what I did, how I did it and what I products I used.<br /><br />So, the first step was to remove all the cabinet doors ready for painting. As I mentioned here, I bought myself an airless spray gun, and I tell you, that baby is worth its weight in gold! The most important advice I can give is to set up a mini spray booth - you do get a bit of overspray and for some reason I don't think I'd have been too popular if I'd painted everything else along with the doors!<br /><br />Once you're all set up, give the doors a light sand before applying a coat of sealer/primer/undercoat. The best, in my opinion, is Zinsser's BIN 123. It's spirit based, dries quickly and can be used with any top coat. I bought three panels of Easycraft Easy Regency from Bunnings, and as they come pre-undercoated, all they needed was two coats of topcoat. After wrestling with the door hinges, all the doors went back on, I replaced the knobs, and voila - a whole new room. I do plan to replace the benchtop, splashback and possibly change the wall cutout down the track, and I'm on the lookout for some lovely pendant lights for above the island, but for now I'm loving the new look and I'm in no hurry to change a thing. But you know how, once you revamp one area, the others look shabby in comparison? My to-do list is growing by the second - I think that little spray gun of mine can expect a serious workout! DIY Kitchen Makeover

My big plan...the kitchen makeover (at last!)

And about time too I hear you say! Now of course, this 'little' makeover took <i>much</i> longer than first thought, but I'm so happy with the result it really doesn't matter. The whole room is much lighter and brighter, and so much nicer to work in. He sometimes likes to chew the paintbrushes if I'm not looking, and yesterday thought it was a fabulous idea to run off with my paint-soaked rag, hoping for a quick game of catch-me-quick-before-I-rip-it-to-shreds. But he really is the most gorgeous boy, and is a huge part of our family. Darcy is <strike>sleeping</strike> assisting while I give the spray gun a serious workout.
