Vintage grain sacks

Before I head off to <a href="http://driftwood-interiors.blogspot.com/2010/05/mad-monday.html">painting classes</a> this morning, I thought I'd pop in to tell you about the vintage grain sacks I found on Friday. Now I realise these sacks have been all over blogland for ages, but these ones are quite unique - along with the usual blue and red stripes, I've tracked down some in greens and even lilacs.They're just gorgeous, and my only dilemma now is deciding what to do with them. Dining table - which look to go for?

So...as part of my kitchen/dining room makeover, I'm thinking I might completely change my dining table. At the moment, we've been using a timber table we bought years ago, in a huge rush before the rellies arrived to visit our new home. We bought it purely for size and serviceability, and it's been impervious to the rough and tumble dished out by a family of five. Oh, and it was also sturdy enough to handle being used as a makeshift dance floor by one rather flamboyant toddler!  <br /><br />Now, I just so happen to have a few dining tables stashed away in my shed. I know I sound like a crazy hoarder type, but really, how could I pass up the chance to buy antique timber turned-leg tables for next to nix? But - there's one little problem - at the moment, the largest of the tables has a nasty chip-board top. To replace it, I can't decide whether to go for lovely, recycled timber (either limed or painted white), or I might just top it with a piece of marble I also happen to have in the shed (don't judge me!) So, you know the drill, what do you think? Vintage chalkboard DIY

On this fine Anzac day public holiday, with the kidlets working furiously on assignments due at school tomorrow (of course, they wouldn't dream of doing them ahead of time) I decided a quick and easy DIY project was the perfect way to spend the morning. So with my new favourite toy, my <a href="http://driftwood-interiors.blogspot.com/2010/04/ta-da.html">airless spray gun</a> at the ready, I whipped this old vintage frame into shape. You really don't need to use chalkboard paint; artists' acrylic works just as well. The only thing to remember is that the paint needs to be very matte, if it has the slightest shine to it the chalk won't adhere properly. I'm always on the lookout for unique pieces, those things that add charm and individuality to a room, reflecting your personality and style. These things can't be bought in one shopping trip; they need to be collected over time.The lovely Lauren over at <a href="http://purestylehome.blogspot.com/2010/03/exercise-designing-undesigned-spaces.html">Pure Style Home</a> recently did a fantastic post on the topic of 'undecorated' spaces and her words really struck a cord.<br /><br />I firmly believe every room should contain at least one unique or vintage piece. It needn't be expensive, or valuable, but the fact that it can't easily be bought by all and sundry is what makes it so special. Art made by your children, something collected or gathered on your travels, or a piece chosen just because you love it is what it's all about.<br /><br />I loved this little pony as soon as I saw him. He once would have been an old rocking horse, but his handles and base are long gone. It's a pretty combination of modern elements and vintage pieces, with the addition of this hand-painted floor.<br /><br />You can achieve this look without going to the effort and expense of painting your floor. I've often painted canvas floor rugs to give a similar look without committing to something so permanent. They look great in kids rooms, they're sealed so they're tough and washable, and can be stored away when you feel like a change. And even better, you can keep them to pass down to the next generation.<br /><br />Have a great weekend everyone, I'll be back in the next few days with the finished artwork I mentioned in my previous post.
