As you can imagine, one wonderful thing about living in London is a short flight will take you to many European cities. Having never traveled to Prague, we decided to kick off the new year there :)
It was very crowded, and wow, how those fireworks sounded like bombs in the middle of the night! (And how they looked like bundled dynamite!) We woke to crushed glass bottles between the cobblestones and busy cleanup crews. For those who stayed up all night (not us), it looked like a good time had been had :)

This Central European city is the sixth most visited in Europe. Architecturally, it was a feast for the eyes!!
Because it was spared from heavy bombing during WWII, it contains one of the world's most pristine and varied collections of architecture in Europe - Art Nouveau, Baroque, Renaissance, Cubist, Gothic, Neo-Classical, and ultra-modern.
Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the end of WWI, this region became part of the Republic of Czechoslovakia. It was captured early by Germany during WWII, and then later became an Eastern Bloc communist country. Czechoslovakia peacefully divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993.
Wintry Day In Prague |
Home to writer Franz Kafka and adored by Mozart, this cultured town continues to host lots of art, theater and music today.
You may have seen this city as the backdrop for blockbuster films Amadeus (1984), Mission Impossible (1996) and The Bourne Identity (2002) to name a few. Each building had such detail, that it really did look like a movie set. Unbelievable!
Smoking Allowed In Restaurants; Yummy Goulash |
Flower Stall; Changing Of The Guard; Marionette Boutique |
And although our kids know how blessed they are to have such opportunities to travel, when we asked what they would have chosen to do they replied, 'Eat in the hotel and watch TV all day!'. The horror! Kids!
Where would the kids like to go? |
Now that we are home, we had a dinner of black-eyed peas for good luck for the new year - a tradition from the American South. I was relieved that I found a can of these beans in the local grocery store. I love these salty bursts of beans with a hint of tin.
What is your New Years tradition?
